Robert hooke discovered cells on the structure of cork from an oak tree. 1800s, biologists claimed that all organisms consist of cells. Virchow stated that all cells come from pre-existing cells. 2 hypotheses: all-cells-from-cells hypothesis: cells do not spring to life spontaneously but are produced only when pre-existing cells grow and divide correct, spontaneous generation hypothesis: organisms arise spontaneously under certain conditions. Theory is a proposed explanation for broad patterns in nature, hypothesis refers to explanations for more tightly focused questions. Prediction is something that can be measured and that must be correct if a hypothesis is valid. All the cells in a multicellular organism are connected by common ancestry. 2 claims about evolution: species are related by common ancestry, the characteristics of species can be modified from generation to generation descent.
