35 views5 pages

Document Summary

Interactions between organisms and their environment are fuelled by complex fluxes and transformations of energy. The forest vegetation is sunlight transformed, as are all the associated bacteria, fungi and animals and all their activities. An ecosystem is a biological community as well all of its abiotic factors influencing the community. Areas of interest to ecosystem ecologist are biomass production, energy flow and carbon storage. This chapter looks at photosynthesis at level of whole ecosystem. Primary production-fixation of energy by autotrophs in an ecosystem. Primary productivity- amount of energy fixed over some interval of time. Gross primary production- total amount of energy fixed by all autotrophs in ecosystem, independent on cost associated with energy fixation. Net primary production- amount of energy left over after autrophs comume it. Npp is gpp respiration from primary producers and is amount if energy available to consumers in ecosystem. Primary productivity is calculated as amount of carbon uptake by primary producers.
