Anatomical planes: relate to position in space and are right angles to one another, transverse plane: divides the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) segments, sagittal plane: divides the body into medial (right) and lateral (left) segments, frontal plane: divides the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) segments, planes do not have to be in the middle of the body. Anatomical axes: are used to describe the direction of movement at joints, longitudinal axis: like a skewer going through the head; in a north south relationship (allows body to rotate left and right; ex: tennis, football, horizontal axis: like a skewer going through your side; in a east west direction (allows body to rotate up and around; ex: soccer, antero posterior axis: like a skewer going through your belly button; in a front to back direction (allows body to rotate left and around; ex: cartwheels) mouth shoulder); ex: bicep curls, shooting a basketball.
