Native americans came, and the forest declined. The expansion of natives coincided with the declination of the forest. When europeans colonized, they brought cattle and horses and the forests had regenerated. The seed from a fallen fruit has to be eaten by a larger animal. It has to pass through the body to end up in the fertilizer. The tree aims at going through the cycle, dropping to the ground, being ingested, and being formed into fertilizer. In general, what shapes habitats (vegetation) is climate. Soils in turn, greatly affect other aspects (roots, water, nutrients). Very different conditions are provided in terms of water retention, nutrients, and so on, of the soil. Soils typically form layers (horizons) reflecting a range of physical and biological processes. The names of these sections are not important, what they do is. Organic layer (o): soil horizons: description organic, litter on top, fine litter deeper.
