UHC Chapter 5: Non-Verbal Communication Non-Verbal Communication: Oral and non-oral messages expressed by other than linguistic means Characteristics of Non-Verbal Communication  Non-Verbal Communication Exists – without speech, we are still able to pick up on the emotions and messages others send  Behaviour has Communicative Value – both intentional and unintentional, it is recognized and others take it into account when responding  It is Primarily Relational  Identity management – creates an image of how we want others to view us  Defines relationships – the different types of greetings in relationships  Conveys emotions – specifically ones that we are unwilling or unable to display verbally  It is Ambiguous – it can be very vague and often difficult to interpret accurately  It is Different from Verbal Communication – things like complexity, flow, clarity, impact and intentionality are different  Non-Verbal Skills are Important – helps with persuasiveness and impacts socio-emotional well being Influences on Non-Verbal Communication  Culture – meanings of gestures vary in different cultures  The symbol ‘okay’ of joining thumb and index finger (Canada = okay, Greece = sexual invitation, France = you’re worth zero)  Universal actions like smiling or laughing may be used all around the world, but in some cultures, the use of these expressions can be frowned upon or discouraged  Gender  Stereotypical – macho men and delicate women  Females are generally better at picking up on non-verbal cues and tend to be more verbally expressive  Women interact at closer distances & men are more likely to lean forward in conversations Functions of Non-Verbal Communication  Repeating  People remember words reinforced by gestures  Emblem – deliberate non-verbal behavior with a specific meaning that everyone in the cultural group knows (pointing to give directions)  Substituting  Emblems replacing a verbal message with non verbal messages (shrugging shoulders, smile, frown)  Important when people are reluctant to express their feelings in words  Complementing  When non-verbal behaviors match the verbal messages (apologizing with the right facial expression and body language)  Illustrators – non-verbal behaviors that accompany and support verbal messages  Accenting  Emphasizing a point with gestures  Regulating  Cues
