Communication: process by which information is exchanged between a sender and a receiver. Chain of command: lines of authority and formal reporting relationships. Downward communication: flows from top of org towards the bottom. Upward communication: flows from bottom of org towards the top. Horizontal communication: occurs between departments or functional units, usually as a means of coordinating effort. Fails to consider informal communication between members. An informal grapevine may spread inaccurate rumors across the org. Filtering: getting the right info to the right people is often inhibited by filtering. Tendency for a message to be watered down or stopped altogether at some point during the transmission. Slowness: chain of command can be painfully slow, especially for horizontal communication between departments. Voice constructive expression of disagreement or concern about work unit or organizational practices. Silence withhold info/thoughts relevant to topic under discussion. Self censorship based on concerns for your own image.
