Document Summary
Concerned with identification, evaluation and control of hazards in the work environment. Goal to present and reduce work-related injuries, illness, and fatalities, and also to protect and promote wellbeing. Until early 20th century, employers took little responsibilities for worker safety. Assumption of risk was prevailing doctrine (when worker accepts job, worker accepts risks associated with job, accidents=fault of the worker). Now, internal responsibility system states that every person is responsible for health and safety. Due diligence - an employer is required to take every precaution reasonable in the circumstances for the protection of the worker. Depression in 1870s - terrible working conditions, long hours, injuries, etc. including children. In 1886, ontario established 1st workers comp legislation. Commission on the relations of capital and labor in canada (establishment of safety standards and inspections, compensation for victims of individual accidents, establishment of labor bureau to oversee these recommendations).
