Variation between lightning and human causes each year. Number of fires and acres burned do not always correlate. Acres burned per fire has gone up in recent years. There are more large fires which are harder to get under control. Lightning causes slightly less than 50% of fires in canada but accounts for nearly 67% of land area burned. Most land is burned from natural causes away from humans in urban centers. Let burn for longer before getting under control. Humans cause slightly more than 50 of fires. Usually in populated forest and grasslands (recreational areas) No correlation between total area and number of fires. Fort mcmurray was relatively small in terms of land burned but it was perceived as a large fire. Depends on climate and type of vegetation. Jack pine well adapted to fire, heat opens cones liberating seeds. Cork oak adapted to fire, spongy bark doesn"t burn because it holds lots of water.
