HORROR AT THE UNCANNY THE UNCANNY? 6. ‘The uncanny’ is that which cannot be but is, for example a dead person ‘cannot  be’ alive, and yet we’ve created figures like zombies and vampires – the ‘Undead’  (but not exactly ‘alive’) 7. In The Island of Doctor Moreau the categories of human and animal have both  been destabilized. 8. The film based on the book, 1996, director and cast members THE HORROR GENRE OF FILM, LITERATURE AND VIDEOGAME  DEPENDS ON THE UNCANNY. 9. P.6: “a misshapen man, short, broad, and clumsy, with a crooked back, a hairy  neck, and a head sunk between his shoulders.” 10. “The black face… startled me profoundly… singularly deformed… 11. The facial part projected, forming something dimly suggestive of a muzzle, and  the huge half­open mouth showed as big white teeth as I have ever seen in a  human mouth.” 12. “He spoke slowly, with a hoarse quality in his voice.” THROUGHOUT, WELLS PLACES LANGUAGE, WHICH IS CATEGORICALLY  AMBIGUOUS. 13. The man (Montgomery’s servant) is human 1. “a misshapen man” 2. “dimly suggestive of a muzzle”  3. “as big white teeth as I have ever seen in a human mouth”
