Downtown is known as the central business district (cbd) The cbd contains consumer, business, and public services because of its accessibility since it is the focal point of the region"s transportaion network. Three models of urban structure describe where groups typically cluster within urban areas. The three models demonstrate that ciies grow in rings, wedges, and nodes. Concentric zone model: a city grows outward from a central area in a series of ive cocnetric rings. The innermost is the cbd where non-residenial aciviies are concentrated. The second ring contains industry and poorer quality housing usually high rise apartments. The third ring is a zone for the working class homes, contains modest housing. Fourth zone has newer and more spacious housing for middle class. A commuters zone beyond the coninuous built-up area of the city is inhabited by people working in the center but live in bedroom communiies for commuters.
