Consists of two parts; maritimes (nova scotia, pei, and new brunswick) and newfoundland and labrador. The atlantic ocean has played a huge role in the way this region developed. Largest city is halifax, followed by st. john"s. Economic development has been slow with having the lowest gdp and highest unemployment rate in 2011. Reasons for this are: political division discourages emergence of integrated economy, has exploited many of its resources, population is widely dispersed. They"ve become heavily dependent on ottawa for economic support. It"s possible that atlantic canada could be reclassified as a have region with its offshore oil and gas resources and lower churchill hydro potential. Contains the appalachian uplands (maritimes) and canadian shield (newfoundland) Orogeny; rocks were folded and faulted about 750 million years ago labrador portion was subject to this. Atlantic canada, especially labrador a has strong continental aspect to its climate and coupled with cold labrador current takes on a more arctic-like climate.
