Consented illness: an illness with inexplicable or uncertain medical symptoms. While patients experience the illness, it is unclear how or why. These illnesses may be source if contention between patients and medical practitioners (i. e. fibromyalgia) Healthism:the idea that, although making proper lifestyle choices, one can be proactive in maintaining one"s health or becoming healthier. An emphasis on an individuals responsibility for their health. Labelling theory:the sociological concept that deviance is not an inherent quality but a label given by society. In this sense , something is not other until society perceives and claims it is so. Medical discourse:society conceptions of medical knowledge that influence our understanding of disease and its treatments. Medicalization:the process in which conditions and behaviours that were previously considered a normal part of life come to be understood as medical problems (i. e. the conceptualization of inattention and hyperactivity as adhd) Paradigm: a widely accepted explanation or framework for understanding a given issue.
