Document Summary

No proper deal: women workers and the canadian labour movement, 1870-1940 by. In the past canadian women workers faced large barriers that limited their union and strike involvement. Women"s natural timidity" were blamed for their lack of participation (along with other sexist explanations) Between the 1800-1900"s workers in manufacturing endured long hours of repetitive, meaningless tasks in hazardous work settings. Workers in the textile industry worked long hours for low salary, and were plagued by inadequate ventilation, high humidity, chemical exposure, considerable noise, poor sanitary facilities and constant pressure to speed up work from their employers. Female workers paid even less than male counterparts (earn half of their wages) weren"t making a living wage. Women workers would frequently change jobs in protest of their horrible working conditions/low salary (lacked stable employment) Because of women"s unstable employment situation it was difficult for female workers to come together and unionize.
