Natural selection favours these callers over those that are easy to locate, who would have been found and eaten. Kin selection: alarm calling can prevent danger to other members of the flock, including relatives. Cave theory (beware: suitable for camouflaged birds that crouch when danger threatens. If any member of the flock notices a hawk and crouches, his hiding effort will have little effect if the other members of his flock do not stop movement as well.
