All the words contain the same vowel sound, a , but in 8 different combinations of letters. The problem is the english language only contains 5 letter characters that represent vowel sounds but more than dozen vowel sounds. Vowels are not the only messy part of the english language i. e. cough, tough, bough, through, though. Heres there 5 words that have the same sequence of 4 letters that appear in the same order in each word but is pronounced in 5 different ways. Even a letter can be pronounced in a whole bunch of different ways i. e. cake, century, ocean, cello. Words borrowed from other languages, even the earliest forms were influences by. Even in modern times we borrow words and we adapt the words to fit into the. English language but we retain the spelling from the original language. Standardized spellings came about when publications began, starting with the bible in 1611.
