All human have unconscious knowledge about the principles of the language they speak. A share system that allows us to understand each other"s ideas when we speak. A generative system: shown creativity of l; human grammar is generative (generating new words and generating new sentences) When we study speech sounds we can consider them from two angles: Acoustic phonetics: acoustics properties of the sound waves that we produce. Articulatory phonetics(focus on this in this course): how we humans use our bodies to produce speech sounds. Source of sound: air flowing from the lungs arrives at the larynx (phonation at the larynx) Haaaaaah your vocal folds are open and the air is passing free;y through the glottis. Source of articulation: the sound is filtered, sharped; articualtion in the mouth.
