Document Summary
Chapter 2 theoretical foundations of music therapy. Natural science and humanistic views exist side by side: complementary and equally important. Music psychology research is characterized by experimental studies, structured observation of behaviour, standardized inventories and tests, etc. Research within the humanistic tradition prefers the use of interviews, participant observation, self-inquiry, narratives and hermeneutic interpretation. Developed in the last decades of the nineteenth century, when the first labs were set up. Major names of this early phase are helmholz, stumpf, rieman, and seashore: established the psychology of music as a recognized scientific discipline in its own right. Psychoacoustics includes a number of elements such as timbre, volume, pitch and duration: timbre defines the quality of the sound. The value of music to hearing impaired people cannot be underestimated. Music therapists have to be aware of problems associated with hearing, where sound is distorted.
