PHILOS 2CT3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Nepotism, Juggling, Reciprocal Altruism
Document Summary
We may all be vulnerable to moral illusions: philosophers use them to shake people out of the na ve belief that our minds give us a transparent window into the world. A new field is using illusions to unmask a sixth sense, the moral sense. The moral law within is increasingly being view with awe and admiration. Human moral sense is complex and filled with quirks that reflect its evolutionary history and neurobiological foundations. Moral goodness is what gives each of us the sense that we are worthy human beings: we seek it in friends and mates, nurture it in our children. A disrespect for morality is blamed for everyday sins and history"s worse atrocities. Science of moral sense can be seen as a way to strengthen those grounds by clarifying what morality is and how it should steer our actions.
