48 views6 pages

Document Summary

The self is divided into two parts: ontological self (i observes and describes) and epistemological self (me this is observed and described). The me is the statements that you make about yourself. The i is the one that has experienced life and makes decisions. The epistemological self is the main topic of this chapter. The main finding is that the self is independent in individualistic societies and interdependent in collectivist. Research has been divided into two ways: the self is a western cultural artifact that has no meaning in other cultures and the self is different in all cultures. A study was accomplished where researchers asked americans and indians to describe people. Most of the time, americans used particular words for traits. However, most of the time indians did not use those words to describe the individual rather complex sentences. This shows that both sets of individuals think in very different ways.
