PSYCH 2B03 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Trait Theory, Predictive Power, Cognitive Dissonance
Document Summary
Almost all research within the trait approach relies on correlational designs. The trait approach focuses exclusively on individual differences (compare individuals) Trait measures are made on ordinal scales: value reflects the rank ordering of each entity measured. Prone to ignoring traits that are common to all. Kluckhohn and murray: every man is in certain respects (a) like all other men, (b) like some other men, (c) like no other man. Personality traits are not the only factors that control an individual"s behavior; situations matter as well. Young adults are more likely to believe that unchangeable personality traits do not exist, whereas older adults challenge this idea. Older people themselves may be more consistent in their personality traits. People differ from one another in the degree to which they have developed a consistent personality. Mentally healthy people tend to have more consistent traits.
