PSYCH 2C03 Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: European Canadian, Stereotype Threat, Jane Elliot
Document Summary
Prejudice is a two-way street; it flows from a minority group to the majority group, as well as from the majority to a minority. Your nationality is only one aspect of your identity that can cause you to be labeled and discriminated against. Racial and ethnic identity is a major focal point for prejudice. Gender, social orientation, religion, weight, age are all aspects of our identities that can leave us vulnerable to prejudice. Canadians are more prejudiced toward homosexuals than toward attitudes. Prejudice and discrimination against those who are overweight or obese is on the rise in many countries. Our profession or hobbies can lead us to being stereotyped: dumb jock ; computer nerd . Simple dislike of a group can be relentless and lead to extreme hatred, thinking of its members as less than human, and to behaviour such as torture, murder, and genocide.
