Chapter 4: social perception, how we come to understand other people. We all have a fundamental fascination with explaining other people"s behaviours. We pay a great deal of attention to every aspect of a person when we first meet them - what they look like, what they say, communicate a great deal without words. Nonverbal communication the way in which people communicate intentionally or unintentionally, without words; nonverbal cues include facial expression, tone, gestures, body position and movement, the use of touch, eye contact. Ability to use nonverbal cues is not limited to humans - we are accurate at interpreting cat"s emotions, dogs can read nonverbals of dogs and humans (outperform chimps) Mirror neurons respond when we perform an action, and when we see someone else perform and action (empathetic crying) Feeling actual disgust and witnessing someone experiencing disgust activates same area of brain. Nonverbals help us express emotions, attitude personality, can substitute for verbal message.
