PSYCH 2E03 Chapter 7: 7 Auditory System 2
Document Summary
Auditory system provides a meaningful representation of sound intensity and frequency. Special features: can locate sounds in the environment, can identify sounds among noise. Loudness refers to the magnitude of the perception created by a sound with a particular physical intensity: related to several factor. Frequency (within audible human range 20 20,000 hz) Don"t detect 20hz sounds as well as sounds in the middle of the audible range. Loudspeaker put infront of subject, subject looks directly at the speaker (sound doesn"t travel pref. to one ear or the other) Can you detect the sound, or can you not. Advantage: more natural environment, normally experience sounds presented outside, not through earphones more realistic idea of threshold. Disadvantage: sound can travel and interact with other objects in the environment reflection, etc. Also other things in the environment that may create sounds: minimum audible pressure (map) threshold. Closed off the auditory canal present sound directly to the ear (closed ear test)
