Document Summary

Common concepts are not easily defined because it"s easy to come up with exceptions to plausible definitions. Set boundaries; if you"re within them you"re judged part of the category. Family resemblance - the notion that members of a category have some features in common; A number of features are shared by any group of category members, these features may not be shared by members of the category so the basis for resemblance may shift from one subset of the category to another. Characteristic features - features that many category members have; more of these features = more likely to be put into the category. Prototype theory - categories are represented by a prototype (average of the examples of that category that you have encountered) which identifies the center of the category. Decisions/inferences about category membership/category are made with reference to this prototype. Prototypes differ for everyone because they are based on experience.
