PSYCH 2H03 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Phineas Gage, Prefrontal Cortex, 3 Lbs
Document Summary
Belief that a loved one has been taken away and replaced by someone else. People with this syndrome insist there are differences in personality and behaviour than only they detect. The problem is that facial recognition requires 2 separate systems. One is for cognitive appraisal (oh you look my father) Other is for emotional appraisal (i feel connected to you ) In capgras syndrome the emotional appraisal aspect is missing. Damage occurs in right side of the temporal lobe which affects the way in which the amygdala operates (amygdala is involved in emotional evaluation-helping us detect threat or danger) Amygdala can also detect positive stimuli-indicators of safety or rewards. Those with damage to amygdala who experience this syndrome are less likely to feel safety and warmth towards a loved one. There are also some notes abnormalities in the right prefrontal cortex.
