Week 9, Semantic Properties Monday, March 10, 2014 Thematic Roles -labels that capture semantic similarities across different kinds of events -label semantic properties of participant NPs in an event -agent -causes the event, the 'do-er' -theme -the event happens to, it undergoes -affected by the event, changes state or position -source - the beginning of a path of motion (Sending a package, kicking a ball from one corner to another) -the starting point -goal -the ending point of the path of motion -location -where this takes place (could also be goal or source) -experiencer -is animate and sentient (aware) -does not have power or choice in the event ex. Laura kicked Robert (robert could be experiencer or theme) -cause -is inanimate -has its own power to cause an event -instrument -is not aware of whats going on, it is inanimate -is used by and agent to bring about an event ex. Karen opened the door with the key Grammatical Roles -thematic roles often map to grammatical roles (agents are often also subjects) -subject -the prominent part of a sentence
