Globalization:
Chapter 25 “The Fantasy of Democracy and Development”
Globalization is characterized by the rise of new system of production and finances that
transcends nation-states, a truly transnational capitalist class, and new supranational
legal and political institutions
“Neoliberalism” = new global model that include fiscal austerity, privatization,
deregulation and trade liberalization = create a single unified field for global capitalism.
Neoliberalism launched a new era of “development” processes after the crisis of the
70s. It was made possible by cheapening and manipulability of labour worldwide
including a decline in income and downward mobility for most
The shift in worldwide production from local and national to global markets meant
domestic markets were no longer strategic or necessary for reproduction of capital.
Capital no longer needs to pay for the reproduction of labour power in order to
reproduce itself=development is a fantasy
Development: refers to a process in which masses of ppl experience an improvement in
their living standards, opportunities for spiritual and cultural growth, ability to exercise a
modicum of control in lives. Access to decent housing, health care, nutrition, etc…
UN reports that 20% of world pop now monopolizes 85% of the worlds wealth, 80% of
world pop must do with 15% of the wealth and the poorest 20% with just 1%
As inequality rises, democracy deteriorates and society experiences social decay,
political violence, authoritarian systems of social control, and militarization.
Concentration of economic power leads to the concentration of political influence and is
the antithesis of democracy
In this age of globalization, development isn’t possible without a democratization of
social life
Chapter 27 Love Online
The internet forms a society
Society serves five main tasks: preserving order, producing and distributing goods
and services, teaching new members, providing its members with a sense of
purpose, and replacing old members. First three tasks is what internet does,
Established governing structures (HTML code, behavior online and domain names)
Self-governing bodies with their own rules and norms of “netiquette”
“married” = growing slowest and “divorced” = growing fastest
