Chapter thirteen: when the baby comes home the dynamics of gender in the. Women tend to take on the bulk of the caring for and thinking about their babies, and a greater proportion of the housework than before they were mothers. Men tend to concentrate more on financial providing while also becoming their babies" playmates and their wives" helpers. This gendered division of work and responsibility in early parenthood establishes the template for a more lasting division of household work based on gender in families formed by heterosexual couples. Today, men are often intended to be involved in the care of their babies, and women often insist on that involvement. 40 couples, all except 5 were married when the study began. Parenthood for them was usually intimately connected with their relationship and the desire to become a family . Many people referred to parenthood as a normal extension of their loving relationship.
