Five w"s (basis of news reports: who (does the reporting, what (gets reported, where (does the issue get reported, why (does the issue get reported, when (does it get reported, common theme in content analysis = change in coverage of the issue over time. Studied newspaper coverage of "food scare" about salmonella. Massage news coverage for 20 days following government statement about one case. Over 12 months, coverage declined significantly, less and less after 4 years (all this despite health evidence that salmonella was increasing). = no "headline" worthy incidents: more quantitative, content analysis can be performed on unstructured info (transcripts of semi-and unstructured interviews) & even qualitative case studies of organizations, (until recently) mainly used to examine printed text/documents. What things need to be counted: depends on specific research questions. Words: frequency with which certain words are used = usually first step, can reveal emphasis, style of writing/presentation & overplaying of certain events.
