SOCWORK 3F03 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Transactional Leadership, Allyn & Bacon, Task Force
Document Summary
Leadership is the process of guiding the development of the group and its members p. 98. Two purposes of leading the group are: guide members towards the completion of a common goal; meeting the socio-emotional needs of members. Task leadership: defining the structure of the group, setting standards, identifying roles, planning and coordinating events, stressing efficiency and productivity. Relationship leadership: providing support and encouragement, boosting morale, showing concern for members, reducing tension and conflict. Group work isn"t just the leader impacting/influencing the members, the membership also impacts the leader. Leaders and members work together exchanging ideas, skills and effort. Effective leaders motivate members, increase their confidence and unite members in common belief, values, and goals. As the group unfolds, members take on leadership roles themselves. Exercising leadership skills in the group increases members self-esteem. Encouraging indigenous leadership helps members exercise their own skills and abilities. Gender roles play an important role in emerging leadership (men viewed more positively)
