Lavish, major stars, wide-screen, colour, classical film scores. But: films were weaker artistically and in popular appeal than those of the previous decade. The successful epics of the 1960s were about subjects other than the bible and rome (excluding spartacus) Exotic locations are used for many new epics (china, africa ) lawrence of arabia. Slave rebellion against rome; slaves are crushed by the power of rome. Mixes a late 1950s epic with the pessimism of the 1960s. Sets the standard for the new epic film score. Not the first choice for the score, 3 people declined prior.
