BUSI 3310 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: Norm (Social)
Document Summary
Chapter 8: social influence, socialization, and organizational culture. Learning objective 8. 1: understand the difference between information dependence and effect dependence, and differentiate compliance, identification, and internalization as motives for social conformity. Groups exert influence over attitudes and behaviours. As a result of social influence, people often feel or act differently from how they would as independent operators. People are highly dependent on others: dependence sets the stage for influence to occur. Often dependent on others for information about the adequacy and appropriateness of our behaviours, thoughts and feelings. Must often rely on information that others provide: information dependence: reliance on others for information about how to think, feel, and act, gives others the chance to influence us. Must also consider the rewards and punishments the group has. People are dependent on the effects of their behaviour. Managers often have a lot of rewards and punishments to keep workers in line: reward cooperative behaviour, lack of cooperation can result in punishment.
