Document Summary

At the end of the 19th century french sociologist emile durkheim agreed that as the level of social solidarity increases, suicide rate declines. Then, beyond a certain point it begins to rise creating a u shaped trend in the graph (figure 1. 2 in textbook). Social solidarity refers to the degree to which group members share beliefs and values, and the intensity and frequency of their interaction. According to durkheim there are three different types of suicide: altruistic: occurs when norms tightly govern behaviour so that individual actions are often in the group"s interest. For ex: in durkheim"s view, when people live in a society that lacks a widely shared moral code, the rate of anomic suicide is likely to be high. There is a striking difference between durkheim"s france and contemporary canada. When durkheim wrote, youth suicide was extremely rare and suicide among working-age people was uncommon.
