Document Summary

Gerry beegan- the studio: photomechanical reproduction and the changing status of design. 1890s was the decade that photographic images were first used in publications. Line methods = image produced on a sensitized metal plate, and then it was etched to produce a relief block. By early 1890s, studios and magazines were using a mixture of reproduction processes. Debate between whether reproduced images added or took away from the value of original art: beegan argued it heightened the standing of the original, highlighting young artists. Etchings and photogravure inserts were on thicker stock than the rest of the magazine: run off separately than the letterpress text then bounded in. Dramatic transition between leighton"s sculptures and beardsley line drawings: beardsley line drawing defended contemporary art against charges of eccentricity. The drawings were as remarkable as for their method of reproduction.
