82 views3 pages

Document Summary

Dendrites - receive sensory signals from other neurons and transmits to cell body. Axon - carries signals from cell body to other neurons / muscles / organs. Separated by small gap, part of the synapse where signals are transmitted b/w neurons. Glial cells provide support for neurons (myelin sheath) Sensory - receive info from external world & convey to brain from spinal cord. Motor - carry signal form spinal cord to muscles for movement. Neurons resting potential is due to [k] in and out of cell membrane. Resulting from open channels for k to flow. Conduction of electric signal within a neuron happens when resting potential is reversed by action potential. If electric signals reach a threshold, initiates an action potential. After action potential reached max, chemical pump reverses imbalance in ions returning neuron to resting potential. Refractory period = action potential cant be reinitiated. Once initiated, action potential spreads down axon jumping across nodes of ranvier to synapse.
