ANAT 100 Chapter 6: Chapter 6 ANAT 100
Document Summary
Cartilage and bone (chapter 6) anat 100. Skeletal system includes bones, cartilage, ligaments, and connective tissue. Bones serve as reservoirs for calcium and phosphorus. Chondroblasts cells that produce matrix of cartilage. Types of cartilage: hyaline in between a lot of joints, lungs, elastic in the ears, epiglottis, fibrocartilage in between spinal discs. Growth: supporting soft tissues, providing gliding surface at articulations, providing a rough draft for embryonic bone. Declines as cartilage becomes mature: appositional growth from outside/periphery. Functions: support and protection, movement, hemopoiesis. Red bone marrow in spongy bone (children) Adults red bone marrow in axial skeleton: storage of mineral and energy reserves. Epiphysis enlarged end to strengthen joint and attachment. Metaphysis between shaft and end, contains growth plate. Growth plate a. k. a. epiphysis, becomes epiphyseal line. Medullary cavity hollow space in shaft. Endosteum layers of cells internal to the bone, contains osteoblast, osteoclast etc. Periosteum covers out surface, made of dense irregular connective tissue: short bones.
