But b structures are not within a single contiguous region of the polypeptide chain. 2 regions that are prone to form extended conformations (each region called b- strand) assemble in 3d space to form a b-sheet. Beta sheet: arrangement of several segments side by side! Lots of segments in the beta conformation together. The r groups of adjacent amino acids - protrude in opposite directions. In the pic ( the r groups are purple) - one is coming towards us - one is going to the inside of the page. So in beta sheets, the r groups point in opposite directions in neighbouring amino acids. However, neighbouring beta strands have r groups pointing in the same direction ( above or below the plane) Hydrogen bonds are found in the plane of the beta sheet. 6. 5 angstroms intrastrand hydrogen bonds are not in line.
