Chapter 9­ Making Ethical Decisions Ethics in the Workplace • Routine decisions: decisions made every day, more or less spontaneous, “analysis  frozen into habit” o Strongly influenced by organizational culture which provides norms and  expectations • This means that if the norm ignores ethical concerns, it becomes habit which  represents 3 challenges for ethics in organizations: o Organizations should make sure that their culture is strong enough so that  habitual ways of responding include solid ethical prototypes o Organizations must ensure that employees are sensitive to ethics, through  training, dialogue and ethical leadership o Organizations must be willing to question current practices to allow the  prototypes behind them that might lack ethics to be reviewed • Ethical awareness is achieved in a given situation when a person realizes that their  actions could affect the interests, welfare, or expectations of other people, even  when a specific moral norm or principle does not come to mind  o Crucial to ensuring that ethical reasoning process will be triggered Factors that Influence Decision Making: • Individual characteristics o Personal Values  o Level of Moral Development: cognitive moral development theory  o Locus of Control: the extent to which one feels control over life events  High internal locus believe that their actions have strong influence  on what happens in their lives  High external locus will often blame fate, luck, influence of others,  etc.  • Contextual Factors o Organizational culture and rewards Enhancing Ethical Decision Making Skills: • Ethical awareness can be enhances by increasing employees’ sensitivity to  different types of eth
