COMM 104 Chapter Notes - Chapter 12: Big Country, First Principle
Document Summary
Two main aspects of energy and ethics: (1) the question of energy sustainability and environmental concerns (2) the ethics of business dealings in the energy sector. Energy is important because it impacts our quality of life. From life expectancy to material well-being to basic needs such as clean water, clean air, food, and sanitation, there is an increasing demand for a better quality of life. First principle of energy consumption: the more energy you consume, the higher your standard of living. The reverse principle: the higher your standard of living, the more energy you consumer. The percentage of energy consumption is increasing faster than the world population, which is a trend that is expected to continue. Ethical challenges we face have to do with the consequences, dangers, and harm that may result from our energy choices. Global carbon emissions are an arising concern. Transportation is a big issue with respect to carbon emissions.
