Document Summary
Customizing-bought something in its original state, but fix it the way you like it. (buy a normal car, but repaint it after purchase, may be more expensive. ) Similarly, you can buy some software outright, most applications are licensed, which is similar to renting. Some licenses have fixed terms; others have none. Acquiring a new software application is like buying a car. If we apply this idea to organizations, we can identify four basic methods for acquiring software applications: buy it and use it as it, buy it and customize it, rent or lease it, build it yourself. Organizations use all these methods; however, option 2 is the most common. Reality is, there are a large number of tremendously powerful and effective software applications, but acquiring these applications does not come free (even if they are open source), and acquiring and integrating these systems does not come without risks.
