HIST 125 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8-9: Erich Ludendorff, Vittorio Emanuele Orlando
Document Summary
Chapter 26: alliances, war, and a troubled peace i. 1914: archduke francis ferdinand (heir to austria-hungarian throne) was assassinated in sarajevo, bosnia. The outbreak of the european war became a worldwide conflict including european colonies and the us. This was followed by the russian, german, and austrian revolutions as well as the collapse of the ottoman empire. The flawed peace settlement ending wwi lead to european international tension, economic dislocation, and conflict. It treated germany harshly and the new international system failed to provide realistic and effective safeguards against a return to power of a vengeful germany. Emergence of the german empire and the alliance systems: Prussia"s victories over austria and france and creation of the german empire in 1871 revolutionized european diplomacy. The majority of germans united to form a nation of a growing population, wealth, industrial capacity, and military power. The french were afraid of germany and resentful of their defeat, loss of territory, and loss of dominance.
