Soviets delayed taking warsaw for political reasons. In 4 months this took, auschwitz remained open. 1944 lodz ghetto had largest jewish pop in nazi europe. June, hitler ordered liquidation of the ghetto. Rumkowski, the jewish elder, announced jews would be transported to work in. When trains returned the next day, people hid but rumkowski"s police hunted them down. Chelmno was closed, so now germans wanted to send the jews in lodz to. 5k were to be moved everyday, but no one believed the germans of rumkowski. Slovakia germans deported 58k jews from slovakia but appeals from clergy & cabinet members to gov"t stopped further deportation.
