Records dating to 4th century bc describe the use of foods, herbs, drugs, douches and sponges to prevent conception. Barrier methods block sperm from reaching the egg. Hormonal methods pills that alter the biochemistry of woman"s body preventing ovulation. Surgical methods tubal sterilization or tubal ligation or hysterectomy and male vasectomy sterilization.
