First stage of the dialogue: socrates" engages in conversation with euthyphro in regards to if he has really thought through the justifications for his actions. The main subject of the euthyphro is a particular moral virtue that of piety or holiness, which is to say showing proper respect for religion and the gods (literally, knowledge of how to properly perform ritual prayers an sacrifices). Euthyphro"s first attempt to answer is that what is beloved by the gods is pious, and what is not beloved by them in impious . Socrates" shows him this is not the correct definition in two ways, the second of which is more important.
