Week 2 reading: get ready for america"s coast-to-coast eclipse . Many people are looking forward to the next total solar eclipse on august 21, 2017. It"s been four years since the moon"s umbral shadow passed through the lower 48 . Total solar eclipse will be 68 miles wide, 2,500 miles long, and its path crosses the breadth of the us from coast to coast and touches dozens of states: oregon, idaho, wyoming, nebraska, kansas, Missouri, illinois, kentucky, tennessee, georgia, north carolina, and south carolina. Luckily, august should be a good month for eclipse viewing across the us. Moon"s umbral shadow first touches down in the pacific ocean. Will take 28 minutes to travel 2400 miles to reach oregon"s coast. Oregon"s beaches will be first to experience the moon"s shadow, but location not optimal for eclipse watching. Albany (1m, 51s) and corvallis (1m, 40s) are deep in the path. Will traverse all of oregon in 9 minutes, and then enter idaho.
