Document Summary

Module 1: homeostasis and the basis for excitable cells. Section 1 introduction to systems physiology and homeostasis. Physiology study of cellular functioning of tissues, organs, and organ systems. Homeostasis = the ability of a cell or organism to regulate and maintain its internal environment regardless of the influences of the external environment. Set point = the range or point at which a variable physiological state like body temp tends to stabilize aka set point. When the external environment changes and influences the internal environment, the body must counter these changes to maintain the internal environment. The maintenance of a set point requires a homeostatic control system to be in place includes three components. Sensor = responsible for detecting an environmental variable. Integrator = compares the variable being detected to its set point. Effector = responsible for initiating the changes to restore the variable back to the set point.
