Treatment of mental disorders in ancient and medieval times: Psych reading notes week 23: at times people with mental disorders have been revered as prophets or spiritual leaders. However, it was more common to believe that these people were possessed by demons or evil spirts: treatments were extremely painful. The asylum movement: eventually there was a shift towards not killing people put placing people with mental disorders in asylums. In asylums people were often chained to the walls in dark and damp cells. They were malnourished and receive very little mental or physical care: the asylum was seen top protect the general public from people with mental disorders. (instead of helping and treating the ill) It was very expensive to access mental health services and those that were covered had very long waiting lists because of the shortage of workers.
