Intellectual disability: significantly impaired intellectual functioning paired with deficits in adaptive functioning. Dual diagnosis: people with a developmental disability who also have a comorbid mental illness: 40% of people with id have another psychological disorder intellectual disability. ~90% of those with id have mild id. Deficits in intellectual functioning: mild id: iq 50/55 70, moderate id: iq 35/40 50/55, severe id: iq 20/25 35/40, profound id: less than 20/25. Impairments in adaptive functioning: i. e. , communication, social interaction, independent living, academics, new systems tend to use adaptive functioning as a determinant of severity of id. Onset during developmental period: cannot be due to brain injury or events later in life. Although they might start at the same level as their peers, they will get less gains than their peers. Intellectual & communication difficulties predispose people with id to have atypical presentations of other psychological disorders.
