Belonging should be balanced with autonomy and competence in order to produce well-being. Ostracism can lead to lower self-regulation, self-defeating behaviour, and aggression. There is a convergence between social and physical pain. Proximity: geographical distance, fu(cid:374)(cid:272)tio(cid:374)al dista(cid:374)(cid:272)e: ho(cid:449) ofte(cid:374) people"s paths (cid:272)ross. Gives us more opportunity to interact with them: anticipation of interaction. Expecting to like someone increases the chance of a rewarding relationship: mere exposure. We like things more after we have been repeatedly exposed to them. Helped our ancestors categorize things/people as familiar and safe. People choose partners who match their attractiveness and other traits. Less attractive people have compensating qualities (wealth, status, etc. : physical-attractiveness stereotype. We assume that pretty people have socially desirable traits. This is only slightly true attractive people are slightly more outgoing, popular, socially polished. Due to self-fulfilling prophecies: attractiveness most affects first impressions.
