Piaget"s theory of moral judgement: children"s moral reasoning changes from rigid acceptance of rules of authorities to appreciation that moral rules are product of social interaction, modifiable. Self-reflective, empathic orientation: role taking, guilt or positive emotion about consequences of actions. Transition level: justifications for helping or not involve internalized values, norms, duties, responsibilities, sometimes reflect concerns for condition of larger society. Stronger internalized stage: helping based on desire to maintain individual & societal. In numerous cultures children who use higher-level prosocial moral reasoning tend to be more sympathetic & prosocial in behaviour contractual obligations or improve condition of society we all need to help each other. Infants prone to fear, development of conscience promoted by mom"s use of gentle discipline that includes reasoning & non-material incentives for compliance: effects of parenting on children"s conscience also vary with genes which affect temperament. Inductive discipline supports conscience development by clarifying how child should behave.
